The Arc of Human Life

The trajectory of the human species is clear, thrusting us towards ever larger and more sophisticated means of organizing ourselves. Indeed, the success of humanity is singularly and simply based on our ability to coordinate ourselves.

Cooperation

After all, cooperation forged our need for language and social understanding, driving the development of the human brain. It is no coincidence that today, nation-states are primarily divided along linguistic lines.

Organization is the Key

Right from the start, since we were hunting and gathering in tribes, human cooperation is the backbone of our success. Which is why eventually, nomadic tribes settled, forming agrarian societies and paving the way for city-states. Inevitably, through conflict, alliances are forged and broken, and industrialization brings railways that connect cities and resource-rich hinterlands into nation- states.

Lesson's Learned in Blood

Naturally, nation-states warred, some small, some large. Two wars were great enough, killed enough people, cost enough resources, to propel a continent up the ladder of human organization to the next level.

Beyond the Nation-state

Enter the European Union, the first continental-state, the logical and inevitable next step in human organization. It's example is already being reproduced in all corners of the world, with the Association of SouthEast Asian Nations, the African Union, Gulf Cooperation Council, the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, and the Union of South American Nations.
